After spending two months organising a fundraising party for the Unique Home orphanage, I was both anxious and excited to visit Unique Home for the first time. The first thing I noticed as we walked towards the entrance was the small post box near the entrance door which was used by locals to deposit their unwanted babies.
Even though we had visited the home unexpectedly, we received a very warm welcome from the admirable women that have dedicated their lives to run the home. The home itself was much smaller than I had expected with 54 girls resided at the home. The home was very cramped with limited amenities for the girls including 3 small rooms that were used simultaneously as a bedroom, dining area and playroom in addition to a small kitchen and an office for visitors.
We learnt that the older girls in the home took care of the younger babies and they all supported each other as one large family. After spending some time talking to the founder and the carers we learnt about the astounding work they did by ensuring that all the girls were educated in English schools and at a later stage married into suitable homes. This is done without any government support or funding, which is an immense challenge for the founder; Prakash Kaur and the other carers but their perseverance and hard work enables them to get by on their limited means.
It was comforting to see how content and happy the children are, but I soon realised that this was probably more to do with the fact that this orphanage was their “Home” and the founder of the home, Prakash Kaur was their “Mother” and so they were oblivious to the concept of the conventional family and home.
As our visit to the Home drew to the end, I realised that this was not the end but the beginning of a long journey that we needed to undertake to raise the funding required to give the girls access to better facilities and a more promising future.
