The attached presentation is for an organisation called Unique Home for Girls based in Jalandhar, Punjab in India.
As the name suggests, the home cares for orphaned and abandoned girls from birth upwards.
My friend Ranjit Thaliwal has long been a supporter of this cause and the attached presentation has been prepared by him.
I had the pleasure of visiting the home on a recent visit to India (3rd December 2008) and met with Bibi Prakash Kaur who has dedicated her life to these girls and tries to ensure that each girl feels a sense of belonging and that the home feels like that child's true home.
The children are sent to fee paying schools after which many of them graduate and marry to start their own families. Having visited the site and spending an afternoon with Prakash Kaur and the children I must say how moved I was by the love and devotion shown by the staff and this is reflected in the happiness of the children. Unfortunately, the stigma of having a daughter remains to some extent in India and no doubt other girls are abandoned by single mothers. You will see in the attached presentation the 'Baby Cradle' Prakash Kaur explained to me how children are often left there in the midst of the night.
Giving the levels of infanticide in India, we should all be grateful that the parents of these children had the option of leaving their children in the loving care of Prakash Kaur. A few of the older girls have decided, as did Prakash Kaur, that they would not marry but instead dedicate their lives to the service of the home and the children.
The home at present houses 54 girls and a new site has been acquired to ensure that the children have more room and that the site can accommodate others who need their valuable help. Could I please ask each of you to help and support this very worthy cause. Donations of money are of course greatly received as are mobile phones (which are then recycled) I'm sure that there is not a home in the UK that does not have 2/3 redundant mobiles gathering dust in a drawer. Those of you who have dress down days at your places of work, could I ask that you consider offering the proceeds to the home? Perhaps the next event that you help organise could be a source to collect money for the home? A sponsored run / walk / bike ride? I'm sure that you all get the idea.
Further details can be found on the website: www.uniquehomeforgirls.co.uk
You can also register online. Registration is free and you will receive updates as to progress of the home.
Should you require any further information, can I ask that you contact either Ranjit at ranjitst@hotmail.co.uk or myself at kul3x@blueyonder.co.uk
Finally, can I ask that you forward this email to all who you feel may be interested in supporting the cause. On the behalf of Unique Home for Girls,
Thank you for taking the time to read this email and I look forward to receiving your help and support in the future.
